Here’s one of my favorite comedians. Pryor knew how to electrically zap an emotion into his audience so well, I think, because he was able to empathize with people (not any particular group of people, just people). He understood, on an instinctual level, that we are all the same at our core. He also had a strong group of friends and writers who encouraged him to be himself on stage, most notably, Paul Mooney (who, strangely enough, does not empathize with everyone). Pryor, to me, was jazz in the flesh.
