Reuben Manco laughed at that one. He sure enough laughed, in the moony night on that mountain stuck so full of perils brought out and set against us. I saw his white teeth shine. He put out his hand and gave me a good whack on the shoulder.
“John, you’re magnificent,” he said.
“Oh,” I said, “I’m not about to claim magnificence to me. Mostly, all my life, I’ve just strove to be a natural man.”
He laughed again, and gave me another whack.
